Finding Twinity From a SL Interview

Space Junky plays some great songs in Second Life

One day I was checking out some news about Second Life and found a nice interview of SpaceJunky from mmorpg. If you love live musical events in SL then you should check out this interview and the band. I will be looking for them in the future now that I’m spending a bit more time in SL. This band is the resident band of a new online show called “Life On Line”.

So of course I wanted to check out the show and went to their website. It’s a show about virtual worlds and social networks online. A very fun talk show which brings some great news of upcoming new technologies and talent. This is where I heard of a virtual world called Twinity. This new world is a bit different. They are making replicas of real life cities which they only have Berlin right now. Even the avatars can look like you in real life by using real pictures with their facegen setup.

Made this with two pictures of me. Still doesn’t look exactly like me.

Twinity has events going on but I haven’t attended one yet. I’m just starting to check things out and made my avatar but it doesn’t look exactly like me. You can buy or rent apartments for yourself and decorate it with stuff you buy with virtual money. This is still in beta and their will be a subscription to have your own place in the future. It looks like you will be able to use real money to buy virtual things but not sure if you can take money out yet. I still need to explore more in the world but wanted to share it with others who might want to check it out.

Second Life Video Tutorials

I thought it would be a great idea to collect all the second life video tutorials I found on the internet for a post. I recently saw one that taught me something I never knew. I never knew I could move the camera this easily and without any restriction. Thought it would be very helpful to others as well!

A really good video tutorial on camera controls!

I think that should cover a lot of the video tutorials. The wiki at secondlife is the best to find all you can ever want. If I find any more interesting videos I’ll add them to this post later.

Reality and Second Life meet with RHPS

Theater shows RHPS in Second Life

RHPS is a term used for the movie “Rocky Horror Picture Show” which has a big fan base who watch the movie all over the world in theaters. Some dress up in outfits like the characters in the movie wear and also act out scenes on a stage. I wrote about a place in Second Life which shows the movie while others write funny remarks to the movie and also dress their avatars up.

I just found out about a special event at 12PM SLT on Thursday, March 1st, which will happen in real life and in virtual life. I read about it from a article and it caught my attention. The Pirate Cinema in Stockholm, Sweden, will be showing the movie to a real audience and will stream the screening in second life as well. They will probably be showing what is happening in second life to the first life audience as well so it’s a real test of virtual interaction. The screening will take place at The Office. I will try to attend and have some fun!

Four Eyed Monsters Review

It’s getting harder to follow all the special events happening in second life. The Sundance channel showing of “Four Eyed Monsters” was one of those I might not have found if I didn’t read a post about it. I am glad I did and attended this unique event. Before the movie was shown I checked out the Sundance Channel Sim and found other people waiting around for the movie to start. I counted 22 people in the theater chatting with hours to go until the movie started. I went off to do some other stuff and made sure I would be reminded about this event.

When the time came I tried to go to the Sundance Sim again but it was too full. I am so glad they had other places that was screening the movie. I went to the most interesting place I know of and that was the Elbow Room. Once I started the movie I found out if was upside down. I never had that experience in second life before. The only way I found to fix the problem is re-login which made me miss parts in the beginning. Started watching and was getting into the movie. Tried to take a picture and the sound stopped. GRRRRR. Tried to start it up again but I couldn’t get it to work. I had to re-login and it worked but later on I found that I could have fixed it by walking to another sim but I didn’t try it so I am not sure if it would have fixed it.

Now I’m getting into this movie which was about two people starting a relationship but they decided to not speak to each other. They could only use a phone, writing, camera, Internet and any other media to express themselves. It was a very good docu-drama and very artistic. I was having fun and the others around me were enjoying it. Because I was watching it at a theater where they usually riff other movies there was a lot of people making fun of the movie too. I find some of the stuff they were saying were hilarious but the majority of the people really enjoyed the movie.

Now the movie is getting to the ending. We all want to know what will happen to this relationship at the end when all of a sudden the video feed was having problems. The movie was getting pixelated and wasn’t able to watch anything. Everyone around me was disappointed they couldn’t see the ending of this movie. Some went to the website and bought the DVD. Others just wanted to complain to people who couldn’t do anything about it. Some joined the Sundance channel group to find out what happened. I was disappointed but joined the group and waited. I found out that other places had a similar problem so I kept trying to teleport to the Sundance Sim and finally got in. Sat down in the theater and waited again. What I thought might happen did happen. They showed the last part of the movie again and I was satisfied. The filmakers were in the group answering questions and was good to hear about the behind the scenes stuff. On their web page at, there’s a section for people to request the showing of their movie in real life cities and second life. If 150 people request a screening at a place then it’s very likely it will happen. So I’m sure there will be another showing in Second Life.

This is actually a oversized notebook page where avatars could
walk on and donate money to the filmmakers.

It was a very fun event to me but it also showed that Second Life isn’t the best venue for this. There were problems that caused some people who joined up just to watch it saying that they won’t stay in second life because it’s too complicated. There is a lot of stuff that needs to be addressed when this kind of event takes place in SL. The fact that there were other theaters was very good. But the only place I found out about it was on the website. If there was a way to transport me to a non full place showing it when I tried to teleport to Sundance would help out extremely! The Upside down problem was experienced by others as well. Sound stopping was a problem too. All of these things need to be fixed one way or another. For me I loved the event and look forward to seeing the movie on DVD. I hope more independent movies get shown this way because it can be shown all around the world easily without a physical location.

This post may be weird to some, interesting to others and exciting to others. When I first joined up to Second Life I found two places that got me very excited. The first was the showing of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” as I described in a previous post. The second is a place that was inspired by a comedy show that ran for 10 years on cable stations. Remember all those old science fiction B movies from the 70’s and 80’s? Did you just love to make fun of how cheesy they were or how bad the acting was? That is what MST3K is all about. The full name of the show was “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” It started off on “The Comedy Channel” and then switched over to “The Scifi Channel” where it ended. It lasted for ten years and was a unique comedy show.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 in Second Life

Some fans have found a way to bring the concept to Second Life. Elex Dusk has provided a theater outside of his Elbow Room club where he shows old movies. The audience watches it and makes fun of it by comments on the movie as it’s being shown. To make this all work at the same time we all have to buffer the movie. This means to push play on the movie control and wait until you see the movie playing. At this time Elex waits for everyone to be buffered and then he calls “movie sign” which means he is starting the movie again. This allows everyone to watch the movie at the same time and give comments on the same scenes. It works similar to the RHPS movie showings without the props and stage performances. Some of the shows are old movies, old ads or new amateur movies like the star trek movies made by fans. Come on down and make fun of these movies while everyone laughs at some great jokes. This event is usually happening every day at 7:00pm SL Time.
