Melting Your Brain in Second Life

There is magic in second life and you can find it from Tuna Oddfellow. In a world where anyone can pull a rabbit from a hat or fly up to the skies, this real life magician has found a way to make something very magical. His shows are mind bending illusions at it’s best in Second Life! He won the NBC “Avatar’s Got Talent” and was announced on an episode of “America’s Got Talent”.

I’ve seen many of his shows and still shocked at how good he can use textures, music and effects to make something so amazing. If you get to see his show be sure to pull back and move your camera around to see all the fantastic visuals. Best to be there before the show so you can be amazed how the world around you changes.

I was given a hat for this show I am attending which changes colors, textures and effects during the show. All of this is controlled by Tuna Oddfellow. His regular shows are 11am SLT on Sundays, and 7pm SLT on Mondays. Visit the Oddfellow Studios.

Open Source Virtual Worlds

Open life is another grid to play on like Second Life

I haven’t been active in Second Life for months now and figured I’d check up on it again. When I was reading other blogs I found a link to Opensim which is an open source project working on their own server similar to Second Life. In fact with every grid I checked out I used the Second Life client to connect. The servers I tried weren’t very busy but I was really only checking out how it compares to Second Life. There’s plenty of stuff that is missing and they are maybe years from getting everything to the level of Second Life.

Just by copying the shortcut for second life and adding some parameters you can log into one of these servers easily. Changing your appearance isn’t explained very well. You start off with a basic female avatar. You have to create a body, eye, skin and hair parts so you can wear and change them. On OSgrid you can play around with web pages on a prim! The most interesting thing I found was when I read articles about how they want to hook these grids up to Second Life and be able to move your avatar from one grid to another. It also seems like Second Life have plans of something like that too. With IBM and Microsoft interested in this project it looks very promising for the future.

Opensim is for making Grids for Second Life

After I played around with the other servers I decided to see if I can start a server of my own on my computer. I tried building with the source code but I got errors. Didn’t want to figure out why so I downloaded the already built server file. Got a server running on my windows system in minutes. Logged in and could walk and fly around a small island. To me that’s impressive and if these servers get more popular it could be very competitive to Second Life.

Virtual Live Band Rocks Second Life

Virtual Live Band plays in Second Life

I’ve always liked the live performances in Second Life ever since I first found them. Usually It’s one singer or a couple of people playing live from one place. I recently found a unique live event with a live band. They consist of 5 members from 3 countries and 5 different locations. One plays from Germany and another from UK with the rest playing from the U.S. They use a program to sync up called ninjam and then send the stream over to SL.

The majority of their songs are original but they do covers also. You can check out their website and find out more about them. Be sure to check out the days they will be playing so you can check them out!. Sign up for their group, “VLB group members”, in SL and find out instantly when they will be playing. You shouldn’t miss this band because they are good and really rock SL!

New Year Eve Events in Second Life

Listening to music and having fun at a new years party

Happy New Year to everyone around the virtual worlds! I wanted to write a fast post on some of the special events in Second Life that I think would be fun to attend. There are many events happening today. I’ve found some of the best talent that I know of. There are lot of parties with DJ’s too but I’m looking for the live musicians mostly. Having someone play a live electric guitar or a piano just gives a virtual party that something special. So to anyone who isn’t attending a party in real life you can check out SL for some fun!

  • Tahoma – 12pm to 5pm SLT live music with a big ball drop at the end.
  • KaChing – open mic event starting at 1pm SLT. You can catch some great musicians playing sometimes here.
  • Noxious – A 10 hour party with live DJ’s starting at 2pm SLT with contests too.
  • Fire Island – Hollywood Glam New years eve party all day.
  • Clyde – Big event with live music starting at 6:30pm SLT.
  • Eclectic Dream – live music starting at 7pm SLT with some great musicians playing with a ball drop too.
  • Gannet Island – A magic and special effects show in SL. Something new I’ll probably try to attend starting at 8:30pm SLT.
  • Del Agua – “This Device” band plays at winterland at 10pm SLT with a live performer from japan after.

Christmas 2007 in Second Life

Spending time in Second Life for Christmas

It’s that time of year where we decorate our places for holidays. We also get in the spirit with new clothes for our avatar. This year I did some searches for Christmas places to go in SL. The interesting thing is the regular search for places didn’t give me the results I expected. Most of the places at the top were not about Christmas and even some had mature content. I even made sure it didn’t include mature content in the search and it still gave me them. Then I used the new search under the all tab and searched for Christmas stuff again. I was happy to see exactly the places I was looking for.

Merry Christmas from all of us at VTOR and have a great virtual holiday experience wherever you may go!

Here are some of the interesting places I found:
Using the new search function I found these:
  • Spring City – Really good place with plenty of Christmas items
  • Fortimus – Plenty of trees to get for your place
  • Buyeo – Another place with great Christmas stuff
Here are some Christmas live events for you to enjoy on Xmas eve day and Christmas day:
  • [Experience Island at 118, 22, 27 (slurl)] – religious experience event in Second life with video of a real life special event. All day (Dec 24th)
  • Kona dAlliez – Johnny99 Gumshoe plays live at 1:00pm. (Dec 24th)
  • Kona dAlliez – Andy Glasgow plays a rock show live 2:00pm. (Dec 24th)
  • [Edloe at 128, 114, 68 (slurl)] – Cylindrian Rutabaga sings at 5:00pm with great vocals. (Dec 24th)
  • Tryggvason – Scarlett LaRoux performs some holiday songs at 7:00pm. (Dec 24th)
  • Marimon – A Christmas party in SL at 8:00pm. (Dec 25th)
